History and Mission
In 1986, Robert W. and Margaret Davenport Sneden established the foundation, originally as a sustaining endowment for Davenport College and its affiliate schools. As the Foundation expanded it diversified its funding support throughout the West Michigan region, concentrating its philanthropy in education (primarily in business and career training), entrepreneurship, and supporting viable economic and business environments, particularly at the neighborhood and micro-community levels.
While its principal focus is still West Michigan, the foundation also supports selected community and social organizations throughout the state. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded over $10 million in grants.
The M.E. Davenport Foundation advocates the development of individual and collective potential through education, initiative, and engagement in community.
